For families

For families

Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is an intensive treatment program for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 who have behavioral problems. This may include school absenteeism, domestic conflicts, youth at risk of crime, problematic substance use or abuse, and aggressive and threatening behavior at school or in general.

FFT is a method that aims to help parents and the young person when family life is challenged. The treatment takes place together with the whole family or those in the family who have a central role in the challenges. FFT helps to correct the young person’s problems in the family, at school, socially and among friends, at work, in the local community, etc.

In FFT, those involved help identify safety and risk factors in the family. This means that the therapist helps the entire family find its strengths and weaknesses in order to be able to work sustainably and constructively with the family. This requires the family to cooperate and commit to the agreements made with the therapist. This ensures the long-term effect of the treatment.

An FFT course lasts between 3 – 6 months. It is an intensive treatment, where the FFT team is available to the family throughout the course.

How do you refer?

When the child/young person is to be referred to an FFT course, this is done through the Social Administration. It is therefore the Social Administration that decides whether a child/young person can be granted an FFT course. If you as a parent are interested in an FFT offer, you can contact the Social Administration, which can inform you whether there is an FFT in the local area/municipality.

If you are in doubt as to whether FFT treatment is an option for you, you can contact FFT Denmark for further information, or information about the nearest team by contacting FFT’s national consultant in Denmark, Rodrigo Galindo.
